Acupuncture for menopause
A number of scientific studies have shown acupuncture to be an effective treatment for menopausal symptoms.  Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh looked at the effect of acupuncture on hot flushes, sleep disturbances and mood changes. Results showed a significant reduction in the severity of hot flushes, a decrease in sleep disturbance, and a reduction in mood swings. Meanwhile, a group from Stanford University looked at women experiencing at least seven hot flushes each day and found that acupuncture decreased the severity of their hot flushes by 28% and the frequency by 47%.

Phone our clinic and ask for Information sheet 1, for more details on this subject.

Trying to stop smoking? Acupuncture and St John's Wort might help!
Many people are trying to stop smoking as a result of the an on smoking in public places coming into force at the end of July. Common treatment includes nicotine gum, but acupuncture and a common health shop herb may help.

In a Norwegian trial 31% of people given acupuncture had quit smoking at the end of the trial compared to none of those given a sham (false acupuncture) treatment.

St Johns wort is a tablet available at chemists and health food shops which is often taken for depression. It is thought to raise the level of an important brain chemical called Dopamine. In one 12 week trial published in the Journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine (2006) 38% of patients taking St John's wort twice a day successfully quit smoking and, further those who quit did so without putting on weight! One word of caution though - before taking St John's wort contact your GP or Pharmacist, because this herb may affect other tablets you are taking.

Mobile phones and health
A study in the International Journal of Oncology looked at the affect of cellular and cordless phones on the development of brain tumours. Anaysing 1,600 tumour patients who had used mobile phones for up to 10 years the authors stated that "the evidence for a connection between phone use and cancer is clear and convincing" in addition they made that point that "the more you use phones the greater the greater the risk of brain tumours." Since 1980 the number of acoustic neuromas (a tumour close to the ear) in Britain has risen from one in every 100,000 to one in 80,000 a year, a dramatic increase for what is normally quite a rare condition. Dr Richard Sullivan, head of clinical programmes at Cancer Research UK was quoted by the Sunday Times saying that the study "suggests a strong link between mobile phones and brain tumours".

The advice has to be to reduce the amount of usage on both mobile and cordless phones, and restrict their use to emergency calls only. Mobile phone radiation is measured using the SAR level. In the UK the SAR limit for mobile phones, is 2.0 W/kg. According to Cnet.com one of the phones with the lowest level is the LG chocolate at 0.14 and one of the highest is the Motorola SLVR L6 at 1.58.

Our Chiropodists treat more than just corns and calluses!
Did you know that Chiropodists at Norris Associates are actually called Podiatrists? This is because they have an extensive University education and as well as treating general foot problems are able to prescribe special shoe inserts called orthotics. These actually work with your foot at you walk to gently alter the way your foot turns and moves, to take away the stress which over time builds up to form corns and calluses. Prevention is better than cure!
