Acupuncture and IBS - Jean's Story
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a disturbing condition which gives bloating, tummy pains, and frequently a mixture of both constipation and diarrhoea at different times. This was the state that Jean found herself in, and after suffering from the condition almost continually for 2 years she heard that acupuncture may help and so contacted Norris Associates. She received acupuncture treatment from Chris Norris, our clinic director who used small painless needles in her hands, legs and tummy. Initially she felt no change, but after 3 sessions she began to feel less bloated and her tummy seemed to settle. After a full course of 8 treatments over 6 weeks her symptoms had cleared up completely. Chris explained that she may have to come back periodically, but in fact she has been symptom free for six months so far!

This effect is backed up by a study presented to the American College of Gastroenterology (Lu et al 2000) which looked at patients receiving acupuncture for IBS. In this study it was found that patients' quality-of-life and gastrointestinal (tummy) symptoms showed a significant reduction. The study authors concluded that acupuncture was an effective form of treatment for IBS, particularly for the pain and stress symptoms of the condition.

Focus on Holistic Therapy
Modern day life is stressful. Whether from meetings at work, and endless driving on congested roads, or days spent with teething toddlers to demanding teens - stress wears you down. Well, don't despair, because what life takes out of you holistic therapy puts back!!
Holistic therapists at Norris Associates are Diploma trained professionals who can supply:
  • Aromatherapy - massage using pure essential plant oils, which are freshly combined for each client. The techniques used are very gentle and deeply relaxing. They help the body to remove waste products which build up through our modern day lifestyle.
  • Reflexology - a powerful technique which targets specific points on the foot corresponding to separate areas in the body. Reflexology helps to balance the body and releases inner tension giving a feeling of deep calm and well being.
  • Massage - deep stroking and kneading movements to work tired and aching muscles. Several types are used. Sports massage is especially good after hard exercise. Indian head massage uses pressure points on the scalp to produce profound effects, and Lymphatic drainage massage targets swollen legs and ankles.

Holistic therapies are available at both Norris Associates clinics, and daytime, evening and Saturday morning appointments can be made.

The ideal caring gift!
Attractive gift vouchers are available at both clinics for Holistic Therapies. If you are stuck for a gift for a friend or relation don't give them a box of chocolates or a pair of socks - give them a relaxing aromatherapy or reflexology session instead. Far more memorable!!

Digital Meridian Imaging
Acupuncture is an ancient technique which can be traced back as far as 1000BC. It uses needles inserted into the body to balance life force energy or 'Qi'. Modern science has identified the effects of acupuncture to stem from subtle changes in body chemicals and electrical charges both on the skin surface and within the body. These electrical charges can actually be measured using a new state-of-the-art computer based apparatus at Norris Associates called an Acugraph. This machine uses a test or 'scan' called Digital meridian imaging (DMI). A small sensitive probe is touched onto points on the hands and feet which are at the ends of each of the acupuncture channels or meridians. This then produces a measurement and graph on the computer screen telling the practitioner about electrical body energy to indicate deficiencies and imbalances. DMI is available at both clinics, with our clinic director Christopher Norris.

Nutrition Bites!
Let the sun shine in

A recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition highlighted the results of a four year trial on the protective effects of vitamin D and calcium against cancer in women. Researchers at Creighton University in the USA looked at 1,179 women aged 55 and over taking vitamin D3 plus calcium or calcium alone. The women who received calcium alone had a 47% lower risk of developing cancer and those who received both calcium and vitamin D experienced a 60% lower risk. Vitamin D levels can be raised by exposure to sunlight, eating vitamin-D rich foods, and supplementation under the supervision of a nutritionalist.
Going nuts

High blood pressure or 'hypertension' is known as the silent epidemic, and it can affect one in three people over the age of 50. Now, a report published in the journal Hypertension has revealed that Omega 3 oils can help. Looking at the diet of 4,680 men and women aged 40 to 59 , researchers assessed the amount of omega-3 fatty acids from foods such as fish, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils Participants with a high omega-3 intake had an blood pressure reading that was 0.6 mm Hg less. While this may not seem a lot, the study authors stated that with blood pressure, every millimeter counts. The advice is to eat less salt, lose a few pounds, avoid heavy drinking, eat more vegetables, whole grains and fruits and more omega-3 oils. Each action will have a small but significant effect, and combining them all will effectively target high blood pressure. .
