Gum disease and heart attacks
Thought going to the dentist was all about having a nice smile? Well, there is more to it than that!
Researchers at the University hospital in Marseille found that those who suffer from gum disease (periodontitis) were more likely to develop coronary heart disease. The team thinks that the link is between gum infections and the development of atherosclerosis - furring of the arteries. There is now even a suggestion that gum disease should be recognized as a standard risk factor alongside high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking and poor diet. |

Organic food nutritionally better
In a four year £12 million project, scientists at Newcastle University compared the nutritional content of organic food compared to non-organic. They found that organic fruit and vegetables contained up to 40 per cent more antioxidants, which have been linked to a reduced risk of cancer and heart disease.
Organic food is more nutritious than ordinary produce, and contains higher quantities of antioxidants which help ward off heart disease and cancer, according to an extensive four-year study. Professor Carlo Leifert who led the study said that the health benefits were so striking that moving to organic food was the equivalent of eating an extra portion of fruit and vegetables every day. The scientists found that antioxidant levels in organic milk were up to 90 per cent higher than in conventional milk, and they found up to 40 per cent more antioxidants in organic vegetables. The Food Standards Agency, which has insisted that organic food is no more healthy than conventional produce, has confirmed it will be reviewing the evidence and considering whether to change its advice. Alzheimers diet link?
In an additional study published in the Journal of Neurology people who eat a diet rich in fish, omega-3 oils, fruits and vegetables are up to 60 per cent less likely to develop Alzheimer's or dementia.
Researchers studied over 8,000 men and women over the age of 65 who did not have dementia at the beginning of the trial. In the four years' follow-up, 183 of the participants developed Alzheimer's and a further 98 had dementia. The researchers found that people who regularly consumed omega-3 oils (canola, flaxseed or walnut for example), reduced their risk of dementia by 60 per cent compared to those who do not regularly consume the oils. People who ate fruits and vegetables every day reduced their risk of dementia by 30 per cent. |
